Today I finally managed to escape from the cells below Daath. I was lost in the hallways under the cathedral for a couple of hours, hiding from everyone who walked past. I stole a sword out of the barracks. I'll need it to protect myself on the way to the port.
I have to get home. Everyone's waiting.
[??/?? - 2nd day since escape]
Today I got onto a ship bound for Belkend. It's not as good as going straight to Baticul, but maybe Father will be there, or someone else who'll take me home.
It's cold and dark back here with the cargo. I'm so hungry.
[??/?? - 4th day since escape]
The ship came into port today, and I managed to get off without being discovered. Father isn't here. The guards at the governor's mansion wouldn't let me in. When I told them who I was, they just laughed at me.
A woman behind the inn gave me some plain bread and a rind of cheese. It tasted amazing.
[??/?? - 6th day since escape]
I've been in Belkend for three days. The guards still won't let me in to see the governor. Father won't be coming back here for another two months at least.
If I want to go home any time soon, I have to go across Inista Marsh.
[??/?? - 7th day since escape]
On the way out of Belkend, three bandits attacked me. I don't know why. My clothes aren't even that fine anymore, and I don't have any money.
I killed all three of them.
[??/?? - 8th day since escape]
I entered the marsh itself today. The monsters here are stronger than the ones outside Daath. I was attacked by wolves and barely got out alive.
Luckily, there are still some trees here. I can climb into one of them to sleep. It's safer than on the ground.
[??/?? - 10th day since escape]
I made it out of the marsh today. I can see Baticul in the distance, but I don't think I can make it there before sundown.
I'll be home tomorrow. I'm sure everyone is worried about me. I hope Mother is okay.
I made it to the city, and went all the way up to the top level. No one tried to stop me, even though I was carrying a weapon.
The guards at the gates of the manor turned me away, though. They didn't even recognize me. It must be because I'm such a mess. I know Mother and Father and Guy will recognize me. I climbed over the back wall.
Mother and Natalia and some maids are in the back garden. Guy is with them. They're playing with a boy who can barely walk - he has red hair just like mine, and a face just like mine.
Master Van was standing behind me. I don't know when he got there. He said that they think that boy, that replica, is me. He said that he's the only one who needs the real me. That everyone else is perfectly happy with the substitute.
I didn't want to believe him. But I watched Natalia put a flower crown on the replica's head, and she looked so happy, just as though it was me. None of them even looked in this direction. They never even saw me.
I don't know what Master Van is thinking, removing Arietta from the Fon Master Guard. She's more loyal to the Fon Master than anyone. If they intended to reduce the size of the guard, then the single person who stayed should have been her, not some nobody with parents in Mohs' employ.
I didn't say anything, but I have to wonder. They moved Arietta into the room across from mine. Her liger mount is too large to go through the door, so I don't think she'll stay here much, which is a relief. She hasn't stopped crying since they brought her things down.
[Rem Decan 34, ND 2016]
First Arietta changing posts, and then the rumour that Master Van's sister entered Mohs' Intelligence Division. Now there's been another God-General added to the ranks, Sync the Tempest. Like me, Van seems to have pulled him up out of thin air, as far as the rest of Daath is concerned. I'm supposed to meet him in three days, after my next mission.
[Rem Decan 36, ND 2016]
Major Cantabile has vanished. No one has been chosen yet to replace her, or take command of her division; she hasn't even been declared missing.
I have the feeling Master Van will push the work off onto me. Just what I needed.
[Rem Decan 37, ND 2016]
Sync the Tempest is a replica of the Fon Master.
No one else would suspect, but that is the only explanation I can think of. I don't know why this replica seems to be so healthy, when the Fon Master grows more ill by the day, but that's the only answer. They're the same age, same general shape, and they sound a lot alike. And Sync wore a mask over his face the whole time he was being introduced to us.
Why was a replica of the Fon Master created in the first place? Was it because Ion has no successor? Or is it that Master Van needs the Fon Master's power the same way he needs mine?
Either way, Van is up to something. And I think Sync might actually know more about it than I do.
From what I've seen of him so far, that doesn't seem like a good thing.
Why are all six of us being sent to look for the Fon Master in Malkuth? As a group, no less. The job would be done just as effectively if they sent Legretta and I - and Arietta, I suppose, she wouldn't accept not going on this mission - and more effectively if we were allowed to split up.
It's at least clear why Sync is being sent; he's here to keep an eye on me. I've noticed that he tends to pop up wherever I am more frequently than he should these last few months.
Ugh. Van, you could have at least left Dist out of this one. It's not like he's going to be useful.
[Rem Decan 25, ND 2018]
Let no one ever know it, but Dist was the one who actually found the Fon Master. Admittedly, it was by flying in his chair over Engeve, stalking that Malkuth colonel he's obsessed with, who apparently just happens to be accompanied by Anise Tatlin, the only remaining Fon Master Guardian.
And where Anise is, we can safely assume Ion is. The two are never far apart; Anise seems as attached to him as Arietta is.
Speaking of Arietta, I suppose someone should go rescue Dist from her tantrum. Sync is far too entertained by it, and Largo and Legretta are planning our assault on the landship the Fon Master is on. That leaves it to me to handle these idiots. Tch.
We'll settle things on Eldrant, then - before or after Van.
Malkuth has arranged their assault for sometime tomorrow; I've already set things up with Ginji for us to fly in under their covering fire, and no doubt the replica's party is planning the same. The Dark Wings are staying behind. I tried to convince Ginji to stay as well, but he refused to listen, and truthfully, he's a better pilot than I could hope to be.
I doubt that I'll make it back alive. Even simple bruises from training have stopped healing; at the same time, it doesn't hurt. I've lost almost all sensitivity to pain. I banged my foot into the corner of one of the Albiore's seats this morning and barely even noticed. It won't be much longer.

That idiot!

I just hope it's long enough.
