[PhanRift] Hey, who left the radio on?

This is a catchall opt in/out for Asch's "the background music haunting me occasionally tells me useful shit" power! Being that it's of the Seventh Fonon (which is memory in addition to sound), it occasionally hits into the 'memory' section and provides Extremely Vaguely Useful information.

However, because it's so vague, it's easily to opt out entirely from that portion of the power - even if you don't, it's not going to tell all your secrets and tragic backstory. Just let me know on this post that you'd rather not have that happen, and I'll keep the BGM to mood music, setting music, and Asch himself.

You can also specifically opt in to this power, in which case it'd be helpful if you answered a couple of questions -

1. Does your character have a theme song, leitmotif, signature instrument, or other musical cue that's strongly associated with them?
2. What kind of tone does your character's personality have? This includes their history and aspects of their personality that they might not immediately portray.

Again, remember that this is generally going to be pretty vague! Asch might have the power but, especially lacking in an entire concept of pop culture, he's not going to be able to interpret it for shit for a long time beyond "oh, that's this person's music, they're coming up behind me."

TLDR local teen is a haunted shuffle, have fun.

Opting IN for Harriet Miller.

Signature sound: melodic dubstep, mixing traditional Peruvian instruments (zampoña and charango) with sick drops.

History: Harriet was the host body of a personified law of metaphysics until almost exactly the time she arrived in Incendia. Her entire life, up to the last two months, was woven backwards in time to provide that entity with a host body. It is literally a divine gift that she continues to exist after its departure.

Personality: Harriet is a fun-loving girl who cares deeply about people and will not hesitate to blow the shit out of anyone who threatens her friends and loved ones.

Opting in!!

1. Nai please tell me you'll use Last Surprise in a fight thread where girlkira is present. Please. Anyway /Will Smith pose at the P5 OST/ Take what you will from it, and anything that has a similar sound is probably fair game?
2. who wants to talk about rebellion That aside though, she is not nearly as put together as she makes herself out to be and despite impressions to the contrary she does in fact give a lot of damns about her reputation. Strong sense of justice, wants to help a lot of people, kind of a mom friend, recovering from being super-withdrawn, A LOT OF ANGER IN A SMALL 5'3 PACKAGE.

Opting in Kyoko.

1.Kyoko has her own theme, Confessio, but it can change to And I'm Home whenever Sayaka is mentioned, either around her or by her.

2.Kyoko is an irritable brat who's been heavily disillusioned, but she's generally good natured. You at least have to give her a reason to dislike you.

OH BOY

1. Yuuri has two tracks directly named after her in the School-Live! OST. One of them is a more light-hearted daily life theme and the second is a pretty creepy, suspenseful one. Hhhhowever, neither of them are really associated that strongly with Yuuri in particular aside from playing during scenes she's in. In Airlocked, I more strongly made a point of associating her with Kyou wa Oyasuminasai and the sort of dark unsettling reprise it has, Kioku no Naka no Machigatta Keshiki (though the latter is more to do with her capital T Trauma surrounding Ruu and her memories so is less likely to Be A Thing in PhanRift)

2. Rii-san's the friendly, put-together reliable big sis and everybody's mom friend! That's all! That's absolutely, definitely all! Don't worry about the looming implication of a Tragic Backstory. It's Fine.

Opt in because did you expect anything else

1. The God-General battle theme is the closest for Sync. I tend to associate him with quieter songs most of the time, since he's usually not in murderrage mode.
2. You know this, so y e p canonmate being lazy as usual

I will opt in for Phi.

She doesn't quite have her own theme, but almost no one in Zero Escape does, but "insert something from the trilogy's soundtrack" is hard to go wrong with.

Phi's history is largely that a few months ago her future self drafted her into a death game in order to create a future where three-quarters of humanity don't Die Horribly, in the process learning a few things about her origins that she would never have found out otherwise because they'd be absurd to the average person; among other things that she's a clone, and the original doomed timeline Phi has a twin brother who was also cloned and set up the whole plot to create several futures where all of humanity don't Die Horribly. Then a certain priest abducted her across universes for an entirely-unrelated actually-evil plot during which she opened up more. She's quietly determined, and a little bit of a schemer; while she's not always interested in the whole truth, when she is she's not going to just give up on finding it.

Opting in!

1. I could drop the Episode Prompto soundtrack in here but also Prompto's Feelings in particular. Let's put Bros on the Road here too when he's feeling comfortable and secure in his friendships.

2. lololol. Prompto's the light-hearted comic relief punk with massive insecurity and SCIENCE TRAUMA PAST. So there might be those electronic notes in his BGM like there are in the Ep. Prompto soundtrack. You know him as well as I do, you know how it is.

I'll opt in for Aya, too!

Aya does have her own themes and several of them: Wind God Girl, Youkai Mountain ~ Mysterious Mountain, the whole Shoot the Bullet soundtrack, and the whole Double Spoiler soundtrack, although things are a bit muddled when it comes to DS and Mountain between her and her rival she'll never talk about Hatate Himekaidou since everything on there plays for both of them.

There's actually not that much to say about Aya, surprisingly! She's been doing indie newspaper things for basically as long as she remembers and loves it, and she has pretty strong opinions about the role of youkai in Gensokyo (which is essentially to cause problems), but she's more serious and less trouble than usual (and make no mistake she is usually A Lot Of Trouble) in Rift because of the way the situation was explained to her - if something opens the barrier around it then most of Gensokyo will pretty much cease to exist.

Opting in with the shitkicker, too.

1. Like Phi, Junpei also doesn't have a theme particular to him, but here's a pretty common tune in 999. This one's a good choice, too, or this when he's chilling/working on something. This one from ZTD is less electronic. A lot of the songs from ZE are creepy and dissonant and unsettling, so I'm trying to pick the ones with more major tones in them; as cynical as Junpei can get, he is still hero boy.

2. Hero roll left in the oven too long, stale and burnt around the edges, very crusty, very resentful and pissy, still a good guy. Longs for the meaning fighting the good fight used to give him, unsure how to fit himself into his new domestic-ish life even though he loves his people fiercely. Would stick his own hand in a fire to spite you, would stick his entire everything in a fire to save a child.

Opting IN!

1: Unknown, but definitely dominated by acoustic instruments (her primary specialty), probably a rather ethereal sound with a pained undercurrent.

2: History summarized: Pidonus is a former human who sold her soul for the power of being a Succubus - and the chance at vengeance on the Demon Lord of Wrath, whose armies murdered most of the rest of her village.

Personality: Oddly happy-go-lucky and kindly for a Succubus who keeps insisting she's Totally Evil You Guys. Likely to stop pretending this is an act after being saved from the influence of her Queen...

Opting in.

1. Jail has a playlist on her journal here. Any song on there could work, especially number 5, but you're welcome to come up with other songs as you see fit.

2. Shit-stirring hedonistic magical thief with a heart of gold, or at least pretty high-quality silver. Both kinder and sadder than she lets on, ultimately just out to have a good time and take care of her friends, in her own gleefully ridiculous way.
nojohnyouare: Looking out a window. ('cause it's so easy)

In for this!

Mai's theme is Shoujo no Ori. For bonus points, here's the official cover I used in her trial.

Mai appears emotionless, but actually has A Lot of feelings that she repressed for ages, and while she's gotten better at acknowledging her emotions, she still has trouble showing them. She had no friends for most of her life and pushed away the ones she did get at first, and she hated herself A Lot, but at least she's getting better now?

1: Second thing second don't you tell me who you think that I can be - heavy metallic percussion, violins, building intensity, and minor keys with key-sharing into brighter modes, Aeolian into Lydian, are common.

2: Alex has an intense need to prove himself and hang-ups about being one of the poorest kids given a rare chance to attend a school usually only open to nobility. He's also thought very, very hard about other stifling bullshit, like gendered nonsense, and wants no part of it; above all he fights for everyone's freedom of self expression and the pursuit of personal happiness.

1: Chvrches features prominently, as does my voiceclaim of Janelle Monae.

2: Under that sweetness is lightning, her kindness and comfort stemming tension and absolutely needing friends she can count on. She has had to be an adult and shoulder adult burdens since before she was 13, was the psychologist and chaplain for her pilot since she was 15, a child soldier; she has a pragmatic and manipulative streak in her and is plotting a coup against the abusive and increasingly incompetent adult Authority Figure of her base, "Colonel" Jim Preston.

Opting in for Sonja!

1. Typically heavy on strings with some woodwinds and piano, with mechanical/otherworldly percussive or music-box elements. Deep, resonant tones paired with frantic, vaguely discordant countermelodies. If you want specific pieces I'd point especially to Pandora's Box by Beats Antique and the VSQ cover of Thrift Shop.

2. Sonja's recent history has been very much colored by her dogged determination to uncover the unusual, occult, and often psychologically dangerous things of the Neath; ultimately, she hopes to bet her soul at cards to win an ill defined "heart's desire" payout, and her efforts at tracking down the other players of the game in question has put her in contact with some of the Neath's oddest people, many of whom she holds real affection for. Generally speaking, she tends to hold loyalty toward individuals rather than factions. Typically she'll side with whatever individual has her immediate affection, and barring that, cheerfully play both sides, particularly enjoying pitting the Church and Hell against each other. She's irreverent, friendly, hedonistic, and frequently ruthless.
dubiouslychthonic: (you did not just say that)

[personal profile] dubiouslychthonic 2018-08-08 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
And opting in for Jetshard as well.

1. Folk music, mostly acoustic, frequently low-quality or degraded recordings of 80s filk (or, in-universe, Alternian space-folk that's aesthetically very similar to 80s filk). Frequently narrative; the story may or may not be immediately applicable to Jetshard herself. Particular themes: Bones, Dawson's Christian, Zero Game.

And possibly Homestuck music associated with the canon jadebloods, although that should probably be used in moderation.

2. I mean I feel like you probably know her pretty well by now but: friendly, kind of Distantly Amused a lot of the time, generally positive or at least fondly long-suffering, but a little cautious about what she shows to others. Under the surface: deeply protective, a little calculating, personally uncomfortable around kids under the age of about 15, frequently a little nervous about people she doesn't know well but knows to be skilled fighters. Has always been a little careful about what she shows to others, although the exact nature of what she's concealing can fluctuate wildly depending on where she is and who she's interacting with.

1. Ravus Aeterna, for when he's feeling like a boss fight. Ravus's Theme, for when he isn't. Being around the twins in particular tends to make Ravus Aeterna start to ramp up.

2. You know this asshole.
nonono7: (Default)

[personal profile] nonono7 2018-08-08 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Opt in for Nono.

Possible themes/playlist:
Nono's actual theme
Nono's final form!!!
And a little less thematic but possibly appropriate, the DieBuster opening (and english version)

You'll notice her leitmotif from the first two songs in the playlist. Her signature instruments are probably violin and piano, with a signature theme more in sweeping orchestral pieces.

I think you have a good idea of Nono's personality, but pieces might show off more of her heroic nature than her initial impression might give off.
moarlazersplz: (Into battle!)

[personal profile] moarlazersplz 2018-08-09 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Opting in for Ruto! Even though this is stupidly difficult considering how much music is from her game.

1. Lots of classical music, often sweeping orchestral themes. The simplest is usually a harp motif, probably something based off of, I don't know, the original title screen music. Her battle music generally defaults to Torn From the Heavens, though it can vary depending on the actual fight! Any other FFXIV music is fair game, though.
2. Ruto goes back and forth between rather enthusiastically cheerful and quiet and more serene, though no matter what she generally has a silly sense of humor. 100% of herself and more gets put into whatever she does.

Just throws Trocadero at you. With particular emphasis on, of course, Blood Gulch Blues and Good Fight, but occasionally with special Jeff Williams guest music of Red vs Blue and Fragments for a way more rock-ass tune.

...But I mean, given the lyrics are also pretty on the nose, just the whole folksy rock of Trocadero works.

Church outwardly tends toward chill and funny and shoot the shit but ends up more frustration and anger-as-default-for-any-negative-emotion, and then deeper down it's confusion and anxiety and a deeply entrenched sense of loss.

Opting in for Arianna! Who you're thankfully pretty familiar with so I don't have to try to figure out how to concisely describe this weird traumatized version of a JRPG princess.

Arianna doesn't actually have a theme song, as such, but most tracks on the EO2U soundtrack end up at least somewhat associated with her (with the big exception being The Heroes Return, which only plays in Classic Mode). I personally associate the anime intro theme song, the first stratum theme, and the sad calm music that's oddly reminiscent of the theme from The Land Before Time with her, with the latter a little more prominent for post-AL Arianna than normal Arianna.
fullmoonfool: (Looking back)

[personal profile] fullmoonfool 2018-09-16 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Opt in on Minako

Basically Persona 3's OST, it's all the same sort of music.

Minako is that one bubbly friendly person who doesn't care what your background is, she'll make friends with you anyway, without being too hyper friendly happy about it.
thedarkheir: (bat)

[personal profile] thedarkheir 2018-09-17 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Opting in for Soma.

1. The Harmony of Dissonance gives him a variation of Ruined Castle Corridor for his theme: YT link, and you can also say Dracula's Fate is another song one can associate with him.

But in general, Baroque-influenced rock and metal.

Personality-wise: He's generally easy-going, trusting, but fiercely protective of those he care for. There's going to be a subtle, darker edge as there's is a bit of Dracula in him.

Since it seems relevant - if Luna has theme music, I'm imagining sharp, precise violins.
